Garry is a high profile industry professional with widely recognised technical and commercial acumen and a substantive track record in the commercialisation of novel energy technologies. He has over 20 years’ experience of successfully working with researchers, entrepreneurs, private investors and public sector funders to build promising low carbon companies, and develop exciting technologies.

Garry has extensive knowledge of UK energy innovation policy and has worked with numerous SME and corporates involved in developing and commercialising renewable energy technologies and has excellent contacts across the academic community. He has strong technical credentials, is regularly invited to act as a reviewer of investment cases and sits on high level groups for a range of projects and programmes. He has played an active role in establishing a number of renewable energy companies and delivered technical and commercial advice to many early stage companies.

Direct involvement in supporting emerging renewable energy companies has led Garry to become actively involved in exploring modern innovation theory including the development of the ‘four journeys framework’. This framework, which can be used to assess the challenges facing any given technology or company, formed the basis of the Carbon Trust innovation strategy, was positively reviewed by the IEA in a recent country review, and has been referenced by IFC and subsequently used by them in the development of the global ‘Innovation Centre’ network.

As well as having been the Technology Director of the Carbon Trust, Garry has a substantive consultancy track record based on the provision of services on renewable energy policy development and implementation. Clients have included the DTI (as a consultant and secondee), DFID, European Commission, Sustainable Energy Ireland, the World Bank, and the Governments of China, Thailand and India.

Garry has a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from The University of Leicester. He sits on the high level steering groups for the RCUK sustainable power generation (Supergen) and End Use Energy Demand (EUED) Programme; is a Member of Advisory Committee for the Welsh Low Carbon Research Institute; was a Member of Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Matrix Panel; sits on the Advisory Group for the Realising Transition Pathways project; was a member of the BIS Industrial Biotechnology Innovation & Growth Team; was a member of IEA Expert Group on Accelerating Energy Innovation; and was an invited reviewer for IPCC Special Report on Renewable Energy.
